Celebrate winter with the Carnaval de Québec 2018
From January 26 to February 11, 2018, it’s winter’s emblematic party, the Carnaval de Québec! This carnival for young and old is a staple of winter in Québec City: people from all over the world invade the city, armed with their boots and their snowsuit to enjoy the many activities offered.
The Carnaval de Québec is nothing new: the first carnival organized in the Old Capital took place in 1894! The first edition of the Carnaval as we know it today, with Bonhomme Carnaval (we give him the nickname Bonhomme) as his icon, was born in 1955. Since then, it’s the winter family event you don’t want to miss!
Activities for all Tastes
To participate in all the activities, you need to buy the official pass, the effigy to the likeness of Bonhomme, sold on the Carnaval’s Web site.
Many activities are organized this year: floor hockey, snow sculpture contest, winter yoga, canoe race on the frozen waters of the St. Lawrence River, crowning of the queen, giant foosball, and much more. Fun for everyone!
Among the staple activities, there is the Charlesbourg Night Parade and the Upper Town Night Parade, on February 3rd and on February 10th respectively. These events are always flamboyant, full of visual feats and lively music, for everyone’s entertainment.
There is also the famous Ice Palace, Bonhomme’s home, that you can visit. It will be in front of the Parliament Building. This year, on Saturdays and Sundays until 4pm, some muralists will decorate the Palace before your eyes with their graffiti works. Furthermore, every evening starting at 5pm, the Palace will become the host of an immersive experience called Odyss Land of Ice. This will surely be impressive!
If you want to spend some time with Bonhomme, know that he will be at Place d’Youville skating rink every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 7pm. Put your skates on!
