Bonhomme and a moose at Quebec Winter Carnival

For a 100 years in Quebec City, February has been rhyming with celebrations. The first carnival took place in 1894, to celebrate winter and give Quebec City’s residents an occasion to fill up on energy before Lent. The celebrations then returned sporadically through the years but were set aside during World War I, the Great Depression of 1929 and World War II. The first edition of the carnival as we know it today took place in 1955 and quickly became an annual event. Thanks to a local group of business people, Quebec Winter Carnival became the largest winter carnival in the world.
